Canada's Bee Needs

May 16, 2013

There has been recent discussion by some commercial beekeepers in Canada about allowing U.S. honeybees to cross the border. International buying/loaning of bees was banned years ago because of the concerns about spreading the varroa mite. At this point in time, the varroa mite has already made its home across most of Canada, so upholding the ban because of this would be rather silly. This would alleviate the declining populations in Canada, but the U.S. has its own honeybee problem. I doubt commercial beekeepers in the U.S. would ship their bees to Canada when they are already highly sought after here in the states. Unfortunately, because honeybee decline is being attributed to more than one cause, I can only see the problem as getting worse before it gets better.
