Hive Survey

May 10, 2013

This week the Bee Informed Partnership released the preliminary findings of its survey of bee loss. This year 31.1% of colonies were lost compared to 22.5% last year. (Numbers are counted at the end of winter) This is a dramatic increase for just one year and a couple of news reports have starting warning the public about this loss. Almonds are frequently mentioned in concern to bees because California supplies most the world's almonds, but a new initiative has been started in Florida to plant 5 million new orange trees in Florida. Citrus production has decreased in FL over the last couple decades and this clearly is an effort to revamp the Florida's orange production. Which brings up the question. If beekeepers are warning there will not be enough bees for the almonds, will getting enough bees for oranges be a problem?
